Shanghai has the reputation of "Oriental Paris". It is one of the four central municipalities in China and the largest city in China. It is the economic, financial, trade and shipping center of mainland China. Shanghai is another emerging tourist destination, with profound modern urban cultural heritage and numerous historical monuments.

Shanghai is sandwiched between the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. In the middle of China's coast, on the south of the mouth of the Yangtze, it is about 2½ hours by air from Beijing or Hong Kong.

The Bund

The Bund is undoubtedly on the top of list of things to see in Shanghai. The Bund displays Shanghai's classic skyline views of colonial architecture and skyscrapers along the 500m wide Huangpu River, which dissects the city into two.

Activities:

  • Stroll down the Bund promenade or board an evening cruise boat
  • Enjoy a panoramic view of the city from one of the world’s tallest buildings

Yuyuan Garden

Yu Garden was a private garden of the Pan family in the Ming Dynasty. It was the largest and most prestigious of its era in Shanghai after it was completed.

Highlights: classical Chinese architecture, exquisite sculptures and carvings, and the busy Yuyuan bazaar.

Activities: photograph ancient architecture, explore Yuyuan Bazaar

Opening hours: 8:30am–5:30pm (Mar–Oct), 8:30am–5pm (Nov–Feb), closed on every Monday (except national holidays)

Location: located in the center of Shanghai's Old City, a few blocks south of the Bund.

 

Oriental Pearl TV Tower

Standing by the bank of the Huangpu River, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower has been the outstanding landmark of Shanghai since its completion in 1994.

With a height of 468 meters (1,535 feet), it was the tallest structure in China before it was surpassed by the Shanghai World Financial Center in 2007. Now, it is the fifth highest tower in the world.

Shanghai Maglev Train---the world's fastest train

At 431 kph (270 mph, twice the speed of a theme park roller coaster), this air-conditioned, super-clean, magnetically-levitated train covers 30 km (19 miles) in only 8 minutes.

Shanghai cuisine

Food is everywhere from every corner and from all kinds of Chinese and international restaurants. Shanghai cuisine are good for people who don’t like spicy or heavy greasy food. Some exquisite snacks may attract kids.

Shanghai Old Street

Shanghai Old Street, or more officially Fangbin Road, is an ideal place to discover what Shanghai was like in the old days.  It is a movie set, and you may see movies or TV shows being made.

Features:

  • Eastern section: The eastern section retains characteristics of residences in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and early Republican days (1911-1949).
  • Western section: The western section is filled with Ming (1368-1644) and Qing style architecture. Black tiles and white-washed walls, red columns, and upturned eaves showcase the style of old Shanghai.
