The Summer Palace complex falls naturally into several sections, each with its own distinct character, some meant for administration, some living, and others relaxation.

Kunming Lake

Kunming Lake, previously known as Great Lake, was constructed during Emperor Qianlong’s reign (1736-1795). The current lake covers an area of over 200 hectares, making up three quarters of the whole garden. You can see the glistening waters, the meandering banks, well-arranged islands, and a host of architectural structures in different styles, both near and far, there view combine to present a wonderful view of the Summer Palace landscape.

Long Corrido

Stretching for 728m along the north shore of Kunming Lake, the open-air Long Corridor is one of the premier sights of the Summer Palace. You can imagine Cixi talking a stroll, enjoying the cool breeze off the lake, and admiring the many thousands of artworks painted on the crossbeams, ceiling and pillars, which depict scenic views from around China, famous myths, Buddhist scenes and folktales.

Longevity Hill

Longevity Hill is about 60 meters (200 feet) high and has many buildings positioned in sequence. The front hill is rich with splendid halls and pavilions, while the back hill, in sharp contrast, is quiet with natural beauty.
